It’s not enough to use only a water resistant backer board such as Dura Rock or Hardi Backer under the tile. These products are only designed not to fall apart when they get wet. The constant moisture in a bathroom wicks its way through the grout and into the backer board. The primary cause of mold and mildew is moisture. Damp surfaces cause the fungi to multiply. There does not need to be standing water for mold and mildew to grow.
